THE VERBAL ADVANTAGE: HOW THE WORDS THAT YOU SPEAK DEFINE YOU

They say a man is as good as his word. But perhaps it would be even more correct to say a man is only as good as his ‘words’. Studies have shown that a person’s vocabulary is representative of his intellect, education, lifestyle and status. People who have the ‘verbal advantage’ are not only super achievers at school but they also do well on their jobs and in their social circles. The bigger your vocabulary, the more you will sound like an educated person with a good background and a high level job. So while it’s pretty obvious that knowing a lot of words is important, what should one do for vocabulary building? Read on to find out.

1. DITCH THE TV, PICK UP BOOKS

Whereas watching Family Guy or a sports game on the TV doesn’t necessarily say something good about your SAT score, being an avid reader surely does. Start with a subject area that interests you and search for books within that category. Good places to find books that might be of interest to you are the, of course, the public library, the Internet and friends’ recommendations. While it’s hard to initially settle down with a book for a quiet evening instead of going out bowling or watching the Superbowl, it will slowly become your favorite hobby.

2. SPEND TIME WITH EDUCATED PEOPLE

The company you keep has a direct effect on the way you are and your vocabulary. If you genuinely want verbal advantage (whether at school or workplaces), try to surround yourself with smart, well-spoken people. You will be able to pick up new words, hear them in the correct context and expose yourself to interesting and rich discussions- all of which will benefit your vocabulary building.

3. INVEST IN VOCABULARY BUILDING SOFTWARE

If you are really serious about gaining the verbal advantage, one of the most effective ways is getting a good program for it.
