Ultimate Vocabulary 2009

If you are interested in increasing your vocabulary for any reason, I highly recommend Ultimate Vocabulary 2009. This software is very helpful for pretty much anyone, from your friends at college to your little brother in the 7th grade, from your dad at work, to your foreign exchange student from Spain. Ultimate Vocabulary has a great system for helping you remember the words you’ve learned recently. Plus you can check out the pronunciation and usage of a word so you can actually know when to say it. Ultimate Vocabulary is strangely easy to use, even for people who aren’t so good with computers (yes Mom, I’m looking at you), and it doesn’t require a huge time commitment either. Combined with the enormous dictionary contained in the program, Ultimate Vocabulary can get anyone on the road to a higher level of diction.

Most vocab programs start you off with high school SAT words. This is great if you have a high school SAT vocabulary. A lot of programs break up the word levels, so if you have to start at a 6th grade vocabulary level, you’ll have to buy a whole new program before you can advance much further. By the time you’re ready for SAT words, you’ve already outgrown the software you just bought. Ultimate Vocabulary starts off with middle school words, and lets you move up as you get better. If you already know the middle school words, great! Start at the high school level. If you already have a sweet vocabulary and can ace that part of the SAT, do the college or adult level. Ultimate Vocabulary even has a special English as a Second Language, or ESL, level. Basically, you can start with this program and keep using it until you run out of words and know the whole dictionary.

Word flashcards are great, you can flip through them and read the words and try to remember what they mead, or you can flip through the meanings and try to guess the word. Then you stick them in your backpack and promptly forget them. Ultimate Vocabulary is like a little voice in the back of your head, saying “hey, remember these words? Let’s try to use them, ok?” It actually sends you little instant messages while you do other stuff on your computer. You can be watching videos on YouTube and it will pop up. You can go “Oh hey, discombobulate! I felt a bit discombobulated after watching that last music video!” UV even helps you learn how to use words in your everyday speech and writing, by showing you 50 different sentences using each word. You can sort of absorb the word into your brain and pop it out in just the right place. Way better than scratching your head and thinking “Wait, I know a fancier word for this, gimme a minute…”
