TIPS FOR INCREASING VOCABULARY

Everybody these days wants to increase vocabulary- and with good reason. Whether you are a student studying for an important exam like the SAT or the GRE, or a business professional that is in the need of a vocabulary increase, a good vocabulary is essential to our good performance in academics as well as at workplaces. Besides, an articulate and eloquent person who displays a high level of good vocabulary comes across as very impressive- and nobody wants to sound like an uneducated or dull individual!

Here are some tips that will help you significantly in learning new words:

1. Learn like a child would.

When we were kids, it was all very easy and natural to pick up an entire language and learn so much about so many things. That was because we had a curious mind that took interest in learning. For increasing vocabulary, that’s the exact attitude you should try to emulate. Being genuinely open to learning and new words, you will be able to improve vocabulary easily.

2. Attach mental images to the new words you learn.

Remember how our elementary school books always had pictures to go with new words (whether it was a picture of a red wagon for ‘car’ or that of a tiger for ‘carnivore’)? That’s because our mind remembers visuals better. So always try to instill a mental image of a new word you learn, whenever possible.

3. Use your increasing vocabulary list.

One of the most effective ways to increase vocabulary and retain the new words you have picked up is by using them often. If you have to even take a conversation with a friend a bit off-track to use a brand new word you have just learnt, do it! Use and repetition are essential to remembering words that have just entered your word bank.

4. Make a habit of learning a new word every day.

There’s nothing as useful and effective as taking it at a good pace. So don’t try to cram in thousands of words in just one day. The best way of firmly working your way up the vocabulary ladder is learn just one new word everyday. Whether you do it by choosing a random word in a dictionary or signing up for a word list mailing program, it’s entirely up to you.
