THE BEST VOCABULARY BUILDING GAMES FOR KIDS

If you are a parent to young children, you probably want to do your part in improving their performance at school. A big part of doing well at school work is a good vocabulary. The more versed your kid is with language and words, the better he will perform at English as well as virtually every other subject. Teaching young children is never an easy job. They are not able to understand why they ‘have to do something’ and are easily distracted- especially if the lessons don’t manage to retain their interest. A great way to get kids to learn new words is through fun and engaging vocabulary building games. Below is a selection of such games that you can create and manage for your kids on your own:

1. FIRST WORD

One of the easiest vocabulary games to play with your kids is ‘First Word’. It can be played while you are inside the house, out having dinner and even in the car. All you have to do is say a random word and your kid has to say the first (and which is almost always clearly related) word that comes to their mind. For instance, if you say ‘school’, your kid might reply immediately with ‘teacher’. This vocabulary building activity will let you in on the mental process of your child as well as help him in learning new words and being resourceful and alert. An alternative to ‘First Word’ is the ‘Rhyming Word’ game where the kid has to respond with a real word that rhymes with the word you said.

2. MIX-UP!

Come up with a sentence (for example, ‘she was not able to go because it had started raining’) and write each word in it on a separate piece of paper (or index card). When you’re done making the cards, mix them all up and then show them to your child. Tell him/her to arrange the cards and try to put the sentence back into its correct and meaningful form as soon as they can. ‘Mix-up!’ is also one of the best vocabulary building games that test your kid’s knowledge of words, sentence structure, agility and resourcefulness.
