REVIEWED: THE BEST PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY

Vocabulary programs are undeniably useful and effective in improving vocabulary. You get word lists, dictionary meanings, usage examples, visual aids, exercises and lots more- all in one place. But with all the vocabulary learning programs available on the market, it can be difficult to choose one that will work best for you. To help you out in your decision, we tested the three best programs to improve vocabulary, reviewed them and ranked them. Here, they are in order of ascending rating!

3. WORD FLASH

Rating: 3/5

Word Flash boasts a words-database of almost 4,000 words that you can learn within a simple-to-use interface. While we severely felt the absence of flash cards (a classic vocabulary learning tool that is a MUST in vocabulary programs), the program does have a nice selection of vocabulary games and quizzes. You can also learn new words by exercises which include activities like sentence completions and multiple choice questions. A major downside of the software is that it is only compatible with Windows XP.

2. WORD SMART

Number two on our list of best programs to improve vocabulary, Word Smart includes flash cards (unlike the self-contradictorily titled ‘Word Flash’) but omits a feature we liked on the former program: quizzes and tests (at this point, we had to ask ourselves: Is it really that hard to include all the best vocabulary learning techniques in programs specifically created for that purpose?) On the plus side, Word Smart covers its modest number of words (2800) quite thoroughly and gives you details like their synonyms, antonyms and origins etc.

1. ULTIMATE VOCABULARY

We don’t believe in love at first sight but it would be lying not to say Ultimate Vocabulary made a good impression from the very first time we ran it. Leaving the competition in the dust is its 140,000+ strong words collection, smart and comprehensive selection of exercises and tests, highly detailed word information, audio pronunciations and our favorite feature: The nifty word messenger that pops up with a new word ever so often- perfect for learning vocabulary even while you are busy doing something else! Our only issue with the program was that it is not compatible with Macs. But hey- if you are a PC user, even that is not a problem.
