HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY

The words that someone uses say a lot about the person. In fact it is said that you can predict a person's educational background, upbringing and even his profession from his vocabulary. Needless to say, the better the vocabulary you have, the more of a good impression you make. In today's education based scenario, having a good vocabulary is essential. That's why it is so important that you try to improve your vocabulary. Here are a number of activities that help to improve vocabulary:

1. READ, READ, READ!

Read as much as you can. The most effective long term vocabulary strategy, reading not only equips you with new words, it also gives you a good understanding of suitable contexts and makes you an overall more educated person.

2. A WORD A DAY KEEPS THE VOCABULARY BLUES AWAY

Try to pick up new words everyday to improve vocabulary. You can do this by just checking the dictionary every day and memorizing a word you like. Or you could sign up for a "Word-a-day" mailing list that will send you a new word to learn every day. You could also improve your vocabulary by playing a word-swapping game with a friend where you could both teach each other a new word every day.

3. SOCIALIZE

Talk more- When you interact a lot and with a large number of people from different backgrounds, you expose yourself to many words, and some of them, from very diverse sources.

4. LOOK UP UNFAMILIAR WORDS

Make a habit of looking up new words you come across in a dictionary. You could write down any unfamiliar words you hear or read on a piece of paper (in fact, maintaining a vocabulary pad wouldn't be a bad idea).This will not only help to improve your vocabulary but you will also be able to get a better understanding of what you read. You will also be able to find out more about the word and even its synonyms (if you use a thesaurus).

5. PLAY SCRABBLE

Everyone knows Scrabble helps to improve vocabulary. If you play it well and play it often, you can not only increase your word bank but also your hometown champion for the game!

6. USE FLASH CARDS

Using flash cards is a proven way of improving vocabulary. Make a habit of going through your flash cards every day.

7. GET A VOCABULARLY BUILDING PROGRAM

There is plenty of really useful vocabulary software available (a personal favorite of ours is Ultimate Vocabulary). If you are serious about improving your vocabulary, you should definitely invest in some good software.

With practice and perseverance, you can use all these methods to improve vocabulary.Just remember to stick to your efforts.
