Vocab learning software is the shortcut to a good vocabulary. Ever met one of those people who use huge words all the time? Have you read an email from someone who could type exactly what they mean in minute detail? Did you ask them how they learned all those descriptive words? I’ll bet they would tell you they read a lot. It’s not fair, right? No matter how much you read, they will always have a head start and a lead on you. So is it possible to become one of those people? How many years do you have to read constantly before you have a vocabulary as good as theirs?

Here’s the deal: A good vocabulary is the natural result of a lifetime of reading. With the exception of a few enthusiastic folks, most avid readers rarely look up a word in the dictionary. They don’t need to. With the amount of stuff they read, odds are they’ve seen that word once or twice before. You don’t need to look up a word if you can guess a little bit of the meaning from the sentence it’s part of. Each time you see that word in a different place, you learn a little more about what it means and how to use it. When you see it often enough, you start to be able to use it yourself. You internalize it and use it in your thoughts, your writing, and your speech.

You can get the same effect by looking up a word on the internet. Plug it into a search engine and not only will you probably get a dictionary definition, you will probably get dozens of results for pages where other people used that word in their writing. You can read a bunch of different sentences using that word in a couple of minutes. Same effect as reading for months or years, only faster. That’s how vocab learning software works, too.
