3 GREAT TRICKS FOR IMPROVING VOCABULARY

Who said learning new words has to be such a difficult, brain-numbing process? Education is most effective when it is interesting and fun. If you have tried learning vocabulary by putting in long sessions, rote memorizing one word after another, you probably know how boring and mundane it can all get. So here we are listing 5 neat tricks for improving vocabulary which will help you in learning new words while still being interesting and fun.

TIP #1: ASSOCIATE, CONNECT AND APPLY!

Our mind remembers things better in groups. The more associations, connections and applications you can attribute to a word, the more you increase your chances of making it yours for life. For instance if you wanted to add the word 'Prodigious' to your word bank, think of all the words that relate to it: Phenomenal, Staggering, Herculean, Formidable, Exceptional etc. You could think about the 'extra ordinary' talents of an artist you like, the 'prodigious' amount of work your boss has given you and how 'Herculean' is coined after the Greek god. This way you would have learnt all these related words quite easily.

TIP #2: VISUALIZE

Another great method for improving vocabulary is by the use of visual aids. If you can attach a related visual to a new word, you have better chances of learning it. For instance, you would remember the meaning of the word 'cosmopolitan' far better if you saw a picture of a city skyline with it. You could also draw out your very own Word Map where you could pin down a word and connect all its synonyms to it through lines. Another great visual aid is a Vocabulary Tree where you use the branches of the trees to form connections between a word and its synonyms, or between all the verbs, adjectives and nouns related to a particular topic.

TIP #3: PLAY WITH WORDS

Ever though the word 'petulant' sounds like saying 'pet you lent'? And if you have ever been lent a pet that was 'irritating' you will not only remember 'petulant' but its meaning 'irritating' as well. If such mnemonics make you remember words better, they are quite the effective vocabulary learning trick for you! By discovering a memory trick that words for you, you could remember difficult words by attaching funny attributes to them whether they're about the way the words sound or what they remind you of. From amongst actual games, Scrabble and Crossword puzzles are great for building vocabulary!
